Final Funding Push for Summer at The Defiant Goldfish

The Goldfish Tavern's restoration is under way but needs additional funding to get open in time for the good weather.

About the campaign

First and most important: Thank you so much to everyone who supported our Kickstarter campaign. Without all of you, we wouldn't be this close to opening our doors. While we weren't able to to get open in the time frame we had hoped, we've started construction and bought a lot of the equipment and materials to get us started! We still need more of our kitchen equipment and furniture, as well as need to pay for the plumbing and construction that we can't do on our own. We’re raising an $18k loan from you, our supporters, to help us build out the rest of the Defiant Goldfish. With your help, we’ll be able to build one very cool restaurant, beer and wine bar, and a coffee shop that will make all of North Tacoma proud and be a great tribute to the Goldfish Tavern.

Re-opening The Goldfish Tavern will our community a better place to live. A neighborhood I want to live in!

Here’s how the finances break down: The funds from Kickstarter helped purchase the materials for the bar itself, the tables for the restaurant, some of the lighting, wall coverings, kitchen equipment, dish and glassware, walk-in and most important, continue to make lease payments while we completed the design, continued to acquire equipment, meet with the city, liquor control board, suppliers, found a contractor and a lender that will help us bring this all to fruition. The majority of The Defiant Goldfish funding came from the support of our Kickstarter backers and Adam Dopps, one of the partners in the Defiant Goldfish. The remaining funds needed are being raised through this campaign loan from CSC, which will be matched dollar-for-dollar with a 0% interest loan from Craft3 for a total of nearly $40,000, the last bit of financing we need to open our doors this summer!

Did you miss our Kickstarter? Here’s what we’re up to: The Defiant Goldfish is Point Defiance's Pizza Bistro, Alehouse, Wine Bar, Wine Store and Coffee Shop. We will select the best Tacoma micro brews, Washington made wines, and locally grown ingredients from right here in the Pacific Northwest, and perfectly pair them with the most spectacular service and friendliest staff you will ever see. You can make this reality. Help bring the Goldfish back!

About The Defiant Goldfish

We are re-opening the historic 1933 Goldfish Tavern in Pt Defiance at the far North End of Tacoma as The Defiant Goldfish. We will be a family friendly beer and wine bar, pizza bistro & coffee shop. We will be open from 7 am until closing time, 7 days a week.

The Goldfish Tavern opened in 1933 in an old Gas Station that served Gas & Candy. At the end of prohibition in 1933, they started serving beer. The gas pumps disappeared over 60 years ago but it has been the center for getting together over a beer in North Tacoma ever since. It is a residential neighborhood, so there is no place else to go. When it closed on Halloween 2 years ago, it left a hole in the heart of Tacoma. The Tavern was about to lose it's grandfather clause zoning exception when we signed our lease. It would not have been able to open again as a business. We had to get permission from the city to allow the zoning exception to stay. The Defiant Goldfish is THE community gathering place that can't be replaced. I would say that over 75% of adults in Tacoma know the Goldfish by name. This campaign will keep this gem alive for Tacoma and their families, and create about 20 new jobs.

The Defiant Goldfish was established in 2015, and is located in Tacoma, WA.

Partner with community sourced capital

Community Sourced Capital exists so that businesses can access affordable capital from their community

By connecting community members, small business owners and mission-aligned funders to the goal of creating healthy communities, we’re introducing a new purpose for financial systems, removing barriers to success for entrepreneurs, and building meaningful relationships around money.

Providing affordable capital to community businesses is vital to our economy

Small businesses are the key generators of jobs in our economy and character in our communities. Everyone seems to know that. What most people don't know is how important funding is to the success of a business.

Even in this day and age, most small businesses simply cannot access the funding they need to succeed. New lenders have emerged to serve this need, but many of them charge equivalent interest rates upwards of 20 or 50 percent. These rates can compromise the stability of the businesses that ultimately provide stability to our communities.

Participate in a financial system for communities, by communities

Join a growing community of lenders regenerating their local economies through finance. Participate in a loan for a small business. Grow your business with your community. Invest in the success of your neighbor.

That's the spirit behind Community Sourced Capital's motto: Fund the world you want to live in.
